Introduction to Horsemanship 101

Intro to Horsemanship 101 is designed for students to take a tour of our facility, ask questions and take this session from the ground. This is a great way to get your feet wet in the world of horses. In this class we will teach you the basics on horse psychology, anatomy, feeding, daily chores, learn safety and grooming, tack anatomy and application, breeds and colors, conformation, horse care and more! We will teach you how to be safe and have fun while learning about these amazing creatures. Please note, no riding in this class. Choose a class specifically for Adults or Children Only.

Class Times: Saturday 8:00AM - 12:00PM (4hrs)

Costs: $150.00

 

 

Horsemanship Sessions

Join us at Cougar Mountain Stables to learn about the magnificent beauty & versatility of our equine companions. Learn the basics of horsemanship so you can interact safely and confidently around them. There are three levels. Each level is two, 3 hour sessions that meet from 8am to 11am on Saturdays. The cost of each level is $250

Level 1: Beginner Horsemanship

Students will learn about safety around horses, breeds, colors, anatomy, eyesight and how to halter and lead a horse. On week 1 & 2 the students begin balance exercises on horseback at the walk.

 

Level 2: Intermediate Horsemanship

Students will review and expand their skills learned in the Level 1 class. There will be a demonstration by our CMS youth and amateur riders on the different styles of riding. Students will learn nutrition, grooming and tacking and continue balance exercises at the walk and trot.

 

Level 3: Advanced Horsemanship

Students continue to review and practice all of the skills learned in Level 1 and Level 2. At Level 3 the students "take the reins" and learn basic control and steering at the walk and the trot. After riding students will learn how to properly stretch and care for their horses by learning the basic medical and vital signs of the horse. Students will take a horses temperature, heart rate, gum color and gut sounds! Students recieve an CMS T-shirt to wear during this level to acknowledge their status as an CMS rider!

Horsemanship Classes are open to adults and children ages 6 and up. Long pants and closed toe shoes with a 1 inch heel are required for riding. Helments are also required and will be provided by CMS. The sessons are designed to run consecutively to provide each student with a logical flow of information. Please arrive for each session 15 minutes early to check in and meet with the instructors.
